Detailed Notes:

We very much like the look of this little dedicated server: it is very well balanced in features. A dual core Atom 330 is around 50% faster than a single core Celeron 220 plus it scales better to load thanks to a more modern microarchitecture. A lot of people scorn the Atom as a server processor feeling it to be too slow, however it actually depends on where the bottleneck is. If your application is memory bottlenecked e.g. video transcoding is an excellent example, then an Atom is actually fairly impressive - I transcode DVDs into MPEG4 on my Atom netbook here at home and it's surprisingly quick. If on the other hand you need raw number crunching power then definitely look elsewhere - a Celeron 220 would be better. Put it this way - I once tried encoding DVDs to h.264 on an Atom and well, it was still going the following day.

World Connectivity:

Interserver has outstanding world connectivity.

Pros:

We like the processor and the ample hard drive space: we especially like how this product doesn't have one single bad feature like so many others. Interserver have a good customer service reputation too, and they also are recognised to have excellent connectivity (you can see a map at http://interserver.net/new-york-new-jersey-fiber-network.html). The price is fairly low for what you get too: we asked by email what it would cost for extra RAM and we were told US$10/month for an extra 1Gb (just enter your requirements in the comments field during checkout, don't try configuring it before checkout or you'll lose the preconfigured package discount).

Cons:

Overusage charges are a little steep but not arse rape like other providers. We would prefer much more transparency about the additional options available for the non-custom packages and their prices: what we were told by email isn't anywhere on the website.

Verdict:

A good, well balanced and well rounded low end dedicated server and one of the very best in this database. Strongly recommended.
